For the 8th time, Tanzania Health Summit, the country’s largest annual health gathering kicks off in the capital city Dodoma from 11th October 2021.
Over the years, THS has transformed from being a traditional conference; to include a broad range of parallel education programs, science, innovation, basic life support trainings, youth capacity building and research strengthening.
The focus of this year’s summit is explained in the theme: Leaving No One Behind 2021-2026: Analyzing the promise, and tracking the progress. The aim is to address issues of equity and inequality by tracking who is left behind and why, as well as coming up with measures to address root causes, and how to monitor progress.
The theme is based on the global development agenda. According to the United Nations, the world is now in the decade of actions to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and in this case for Tanzania, equity is at the centre of national policy agenda.
The commitment to “Leave No One Behind” is a core principle of the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development and the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The Tanzanian Government has also adopted it through the Ministry of Health Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children.
The Ministry states, ‘Leaving no one behind’ during the launching event of the Health Sector Strategic Plan Five (HSSP V) 2021 – 2026. Leave no one behind puts equity at the centre of national policy agendas, representing a critical improvement over the previous set of Millennium Development Goals which were largely silent on the issue of social disparities.
Adopting the 2030 Agenda for SDGs will provide a framework to stimulate actions to promote health and well-being, hence ensuring no one is left behind. Despite some improvements in healthcare infrastructures and services provision, inequities in accessing healthcare service within Tanzania communities persist.
THS2021 is opportunity to network, learn, find solutions and grow. There is always a scientific solution and best practices to help us overcome and face significant challenges. It will be a summit to celebrate progress and achievements.
